It is an electronic safety device designed to manage the seamless transfer of items between cleanrooms, labs and controlled environments. It prevents from cross-contamination between clean and less-clean areas through sensors, user actions, alarms, indicator lights and safety conditions.
The two main types of pass boxes are:
A static pass box is a simple transfer system used between two cleanrooms or controlled areas. There is no filtration system or airflow mechanism. It prevents contamination by ensuring only one door opens at a time due to the interlocking feature.
The dynamic pass box has an air filtration system usually a HEPA Filter and a blower fan. It assists in reducing contamination and airborne particles when material are transferred from non-clean areas to cleanrooms. Usually these industrial pass box systems are crucial in environments such as pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
The item is placed inside the industrial pass box from the entry side and the first door is closed securely. Until the first one is closed, the second door remains locked. Once the indicator shows it's safe, the item is removed by opening the second door on the clean side.
It works on an electronic interlocking system that ensures only one door can be opened at a time. This prevents contamination between different environments, such as cleanrooms and non-clean areas. In static pass box system, the second door can be opened only when the first door is closed and locked, while the item is placed inside. Whereas, in Dynamic pass box, the airflow is maintained by the filtration system to maintain clean airflow during the material transfer.
